2008 PFLAG SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS AND RECEPTION

Once again PFLAG was proud to award eight Eugene Moore Memorial scholarships to eight outstanding candidates. These $1,000 awards were presented at the scholarship reception held on May 3 at the home of Jim and Donna Rochester. The Men’s Social Network presented two $1,000 awards that evening, making a total of $10,000 in scholarship money made available to deserving students. As in other years, the selection was made difficult due to the exceptional applicants. This year was special because all ten recipients were present (below) as well as many family members and friends of these winners.

Some highlights of the evening:

A young Salpointe senior attended with her proud mother who, when her daughter first came out, had great difficulty accepting that her daughter was gay. The young woman stated in her application that there was a period of six months when she and her mom did not speak a single word to each other. Yet, now they are closer than ever, and this young woman has already proven herself as a leader through school and community activities. She plans to study international relations and religious studies at either NAU or the University of Oregon. She has been accepted at both schools for the fall semester.

PFLAG’s eight winners and the two Men’s Social Network winners will be attending the following schools in the fall:

ASU - Pre-Med
U of A - Creative Writing and English
U of A - Photography – Education
NAU - Criminal Justice – Sociology
U of A - Computer Science – Spanish
U of A - Women’s Studies U of A College of Law
U of A - Secondary Education, emphasis in Political Science and Journalism
U of A - College of Law
NAU or University of Oregon - International Relations-Religious Studies

Here are a few of the comments received from the winners.

“Thank you all for the extreme honor of receiving the scholarship. Your support means a lot to me as I begin my final undergraduate year at the U of A. I’m glad to know that our community has resources that you all offer to support my growth.”

“Thank you for selecting me as a scholarship recipient. I greatly appreciate your support. Also, PFLAG is one of the reasons I made it to and through college in the first place and I have a lot of respect for all the work you do!"

“I would like to take the time to tell you all what a great honor it was for me to be chosen for a scholarship. With the money from this scholarship I am able to buy books and study over the summer.”

“Thank you and I will certainly take with me back to school the warm embrace and support I found in PFLAG.”

Congratulations to all the winners and best wishes from PFLAG for a successful academic year.

Also, we wish to thank all those who contributed to the scholarship fund for next year. Your dollars contribute not only to a young student's education but also ultimately to the community as these students use their knowledge and compassion to become leaders and make a difference in the quality of all of our lives. PFLAG is extremely grateful and honored to serve as a conduit from you to these outstanding young people.
